I’m finishing a Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara) which I started last year, before Tara. He’ll sit on a dark lotus in a luminous sky. The setting I have in mind is inspired by this traditional Tibetan poem, quoted in Sogyal Rinpoche’s The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying:
Avalokiteshvara is like the moon
Whose cool light puts out the burning fires of samsara
In its rays the night-flowering lotus of compassion
Opens wide its petals.

And I’m also picking up a project I started two years ago, based on another photo by my dear friend Diane Barker. Two nomad girls returning from pilgrimage in eastern Tibet are the subject of this contemporary piece:
